According to Bloomberg, Spotify is rebranding its live audio app and integrating it into its main music streaming service to make it more prominent. Spotify Live, a space where producers can host talks that members can listen to, will be renamed from Greenroom, which was introduced last June.
Greenroom didn’t require a Spotify account when it first launched, but that’s likely to change now that the product is moving to the main streaming app as part of the rebranding. Developer Steve Moser uncovered evidence of the upgrade, which is anticipated in the second quarter, in Spotify’s iPhone app, which was corroborated by Bloomberg’s sources.
Greenroom, a Spotify rival to Clubhouse, was released for iOS and Android last year. It was constructed using Locker Room, an app developed by Betty Labs, a software company that Spotify purchased in March. Greenroom was one of several tech platforms launching live audio products at the time, seeking to capitalize on the attention (and users) generated by Clubhouse, which was initially invite-only.
Greenroom, unlike live audio services like Twitter’s Spaces, hasn’t really gained a bigger audience yet, despite getting off to a poor start following its makeover last year.
On Wednesday, Spotify did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Verge.
