Snapchat Has Released a New Lens to Help You Learn The Alphabet

Snap is releasing a new Snapchat lens that will aid in the learning of American Sign Language (ASL). Snapchat is developing ASL Alphabet Lens in collaboration with SignAll, a firm that has developed technology that can translate sign language.

“Led solely by Snap’s Deafengers, the ASL Alphabet Lens teaches you to fingerspell your name, practice the ASL Alphabet, and play games that put new skills to the test,” Snap wrote in a blog post.

If you have Snapchat on your phone, you may try the lens by clicking this link, which should open in the app. I spent a few minutes looking for it and was rather impressed. I tried out a class that showed me how to fingerspell the alphabet. I’d sign with one hand while holding my phone in the other, mirroring the hand forms on the screen. A tool to assist you fingerspell words and a tool to help you remember which handshapes correspond to which letter are also included in the lens.

In September, for International Week of the Deaf, Snapchat and SignAll released stickers and AR lenses.
