How to use the Command Prompt to launch Windows 10 in Safe Mode

You can access Windows in a bare-bones session with few drivers loaded, no networking, and no desktop loaded by starting the operating system in safe mode with command prompt. You can run fixes, diagnostics, or any other task that you could typically carry out from a command prompt from this mode.

When attempting to eradicate a computer virus that launches its own software in place of the default desktop, this mode is extremely helpful. You can start Windows in Safe Mode with Command Prompt before the malware loads and then quickly remove it.

Unfortunately, Microsoft sacrificed easy access to Windows Safe Mode in order to speed up the boot time of Windows 10. Now, to launch in Safe Mode, you must follow a number of steps rather than simply pressing F8 as you did in earlier operating systems. The subsequent stages are listed.

How to use the Command Prompt to launch Windows 10 in Safe Mode

Starting from the Windows 10 login screen is the simplest way to enter Safe Mode with Command Prompt. You can either log out, restart your computer, or simultaneously press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to view this screen.

Holding down the Shift key on your keyboard while at the Windows 10 sign-in screen is advised. Click Restart after pressing the Power button (Windows 10 Power Button) while keeping the Shift key depressed.

To enter the Troubleshooting options screen, click the Troubleshooting button on the previous screen.

To enter the Advanced Options screen, as illustrated below, click the Advanced Options button at the aforementioned screen.

The Startup Settings screen will now appear after you choose the Startup Settings option on the previous screen.

Click the Restart button on the screen above. Windows will now start, but before it does, you’ll see a menu, as seen below, with options you can choose to designate how Windows should start.

The number 6 key on your keyboard should be pressed at this point to launch Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

Now that Windows 10 has started, you will see the standard login screen. When you enter your password, you will bypass the default Windows desktop and be taken directly to a Windows Command Prompt, as shown below.

You can enter instructions from this prompt, and they will be executed immediately from the command prompt. By typing Explorer.exe and clicking enter, you can also launch applications like the Windows Explorer, the Task Manager, and the Registry Editor (regedit.exe, taskmgr.exe, and taskmgr.exe).

When it’s time to restart your computer in normal mode, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once again to enter the security screen, and then shut down or restart your computer by pressing the power button.

What should I do if the login screen is not accessible?

After a few tries, Windows will show a recovery screen similar to the one below if you try to start it, but it is unable to do so correctly.

You should now carry out the actions listed below. By doing this, you’ll be able to enter the Safe Mode selection screen without having to start Windows and go to the login page first.
